やっほ〜 thanks to those that came to language lessons. This week I’ll focus on Sapporo, the biggest city and prefectural capital of Hokkaido (北海道).
- Sapporo Beer Museum: you can view the history of and taste the world famous Sapporo Beer. I strongly recommend their Hokkaido limited edition beer (you can also find in conbini (コンビニ) and supermarkets around Hokkaido; but only Hokkaido).
- Sapporo Snow Festival (さっぽろ雪まつり): use Google to look at pictures and when they hold it. It’s amazing.
- Susukino area (すすきの): the infamous night life district
- Otherwise, Sapporo is more of a city to live in or use as transit to go skiing, so I’ll include some nice day trip locations from Sapporo:
- Nikka Whiskey Museum: in Yoichi city (余市、go by train or find a non-alcoholic driver)
- Otaru city (小樽): a port city renowned for its fish. Absolutely delicious. It’s in between Yoichi and Sapporo.
- Kan Yasuda Sculpture Museum Arte Piazza Bibai (安田侃彫刻美術館アルテピアッツア美唄): amazing outdoor sculpture museum. Around an hour drive from Sapporo.
- Being the prefectural capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo gets the island’s best catch and produce. Ranging from ramen, French food, Italian food, sushi, and tempura, Sapporo will not disappoint.
- I would recommend using Sapporo as a base to go on day trips from so that you can have multiple dinners in the city.
- To and from: Sapporo has its main airport an hour’s drive (or 40 minute train) from the city center, Shin-Chitose Airport (新千歳空港); an hour and a half flight from Tokyo. During the ski season you can fly directly to Sapporo from Bangkok/Hong Kong.
- Within: the city does have a metro network better than Kyoto’s but as anyone who has seen a map would know, Hokkaido has a large abundance of land (similar to the US), so I’d recommend renting a car. I wouldn’t recommend driving in the winter/when there’s snow.
- Near Sapporo station or Susukino.
