肉じゃが - Meat and Potato With Sweet Broth
This recipe is great for a filling, cheap meal on a cold day. How about some basic Japanese food made with meat and potatoes? It has a sweet broth that soaks into the meat and vegetables, and is a perfect a side dish with rice, so give it a try.
I have tried to find a specific UK store that sells the ingredients you will need to make this recipe in brackets.
200G of Thinly sliced beef or pork (Tesco Beef Stir Fry Strips)
3 medium sized potatoes
1 carrot
1 onion
200ml Water
2tbsp Soy Sauce (You can buy this at any Asian Mart)
2tbsp Cooking or Normal Sake (Asian Mart)
2tbsp Sugar (Preferably white sugar but doesn’t really matter)
2tbsp Mirin (Asian Mart)
1/2tbsp Dashi (Asian Mart)
Cut and peel the potatoes and carrots into bite-size chunks.
Thinly slice the whole onion.
Cut the meat into smaller bite-sized pieces.
Lightly heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil and fry the meat until slightly browned.
Add the vegetables and another tablespoon of vegetable oil and stir-fry until the mixture is coated with oil, then pour in the sugar and water.
Add the rest of the seasonings, cover with a lid, and simmer over low/medium heat for 20 to 30 minutes.
It's done when you can easily slide a chopstick through the potatoes and carrots. The water should be almost fully reduced and turned into a sauce.
